You manage to find one last tube, but according to the box, it expired about a year ago. Should you throw it out, or can you still use it and save yourself a trip to the store? There are various kinds of at-home dental products, and while some have expiration dates, others do not; moreover, while the consequences of using expired dental products are generally not as dire as eating expired food, it still may not be in your best interest to do so. Here’s what you need to know about various oral hygiene items when deciding whether you should throw them out.

What Does Expiration Mean for Dental Care Products?

When it comes to food, expiration is usually due to degradation by bacteria making the item no longer safe for consumption. However, with most oral hygiene products, it refers to weakening of ingredients over time. They won’t be dangerous to use, but they also won’t be as effective. This is not always the case, though, which is why it’s important to know what expiration entails for each product.

Toothpaste

It’s usually recommended not to use toothpaste that’s more than 2 years past the manufacture date. Not only will the flavor subside, but the fluoride won’t stick to your teeth, meaning it won’t remove plaque very well.

Dental Floss

Unlike toothpaste, floss will not lose its effectiveness over time; however, the mint flavor will fade after a year. You’ll still be able to clean between your teeth, but the experience may not be as enjoyable.

Mouthwash

Most mouthwash contains alcohol or some other antiseptic to fight bacteria. Since the mixture also contains a high percentage of water, the antiseptic will start to dissolve 2 or 3 years past its expiration date, becoming diluted and ineffective.

Keep in mind that the presence of water means there’s a chance of bacterial growth after expiration. Hence, unlike other dental hygiene products, expired mouthwash should be considered potentially unsafe.

Toothbrush

Naturally, an unopened and unused toothbrush will never expire. That being said, once you start using it, it can become frayed and collect bacteria over time. You should replace your old toothbrush once every three or four months; for an electric toothbrush, switch out the head. If you ever use your toothbrush while sick, you should get rid of it regardless of how old it is.

If you’re unsure whether a dental product is okay to use, throw it out to be safe, especially if its texture or appearance has changed. Make sure to speak with your dentist during your next checkup about the products you’re using and ask for recommendations. Remember, good oral hygiene means taking care of your teeth every day – and that means making sure you have the right tools for the job!

About the Practice

At Prime Dentistry, Dr. Dhiren Ahir is proud to be helping families in Denton.
