One of the biggest advantages of dental implants is that they look, feel, and function like natural teeth—but what about cavities? Many people wonder if their new implants are susceptible to the same kind of decay that affects real teeth. The good news is that dental implants cannot get cavities, but that doesn’t mean they’re completely maintenance-free. Let’s take a closer look at why implants don’t decay and what you still need to do to keep them healthy.

Why Dental Implants Don’t Get Cavities

Dental implants are made from materials that are not biological—typically titanium for the implant post and ceramic or porcelain for the crown. Since these materials don’t contain the natural structures found in tooth enamel, bacteria and acids have nothing to erode. In other words, your dental implant itself is immune to cavities.

However, while the implant can’t decay, the tissues around it still can become infected if not properly cared for. This condition, known as peri-implantitis, is similar to gum disease and can cause inflammation, bone loss, and even implant failure if untreated.

Peri-Implantitis: The “Cavity” of Implants

Peri-implantitis develops when plaque and bacteria build up around the base of the implant, causing the gums to become red, swollen, and tender. If left untreated, it can damage the bone that supports the implant. While it’s not technically a cavity, the result can be just as serious.

The best way to prevent peri-implantitis is through excellent oral hygiene—just like you would care for your natural teeth. Brushing twice a day, flossing daily (especially around the implant), and visiting your dentist regularly for cleanings and checkups are essential.

Caring for Your Dental Implants

Here are a few tips to keep your implants healthy and cavity-free:

  • Brush and floss daily: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and implant-safe floss or interdental brushes.
  • Use an antibacterial mouthwash: Helps control plaque and reduce bacteria around the implant.
  • See your dentist regularly: Routine exams allow your dentist to spot early signs of gum inflammation or bone loss.
  • Avoid smoking: Tobacco increases your risk of gum disease and slows healing.

While dental implants can’t get cavities, they still need proper care to last a lifetime. Protect your gums and surrounding bone just like you would protect natural teeth. With good oral hygiene and regular dental visits, your implants can stay healthy, strong, and beautiful for years to come.
