6 Things to Do If You Lose a Dental Filling

Dental fillings are used to repair or restore teeth. They are often used to fill cavities and can also repair teeth that have been broken, worn down, or cracked. Fillings can be made from a variety of materials, including gold, porcelain, and silver amalgam. Composite resin fillings are one of the most popular options since they are the same color as the tooth and can mimic a lot of its qualities. Though they are resistant to wear, this doesn’t mean that they can’t be damaged or fall out. If you lost a dental filling, read on to learn six steps to get the situation under control.

Step #1: Call Your Dentist

As soon as your filling falls out, contact your dentist so they can help you set up an appointment to come in and have it repaired. If you’re experiencing any pain or discomfort, they should be able to give you tips to lessen it. Additionally, if this issue occurs before or after hours, their office voicemail may give you information on what to do in the meantime.

Step #2: Keep the Filling

If you’re able to locate the filling, store it somewhere safe so you can bring it with you to your appointment. This way, your dentist will be able to determine if it can be reused. If not, they will get you a new one.

Step #3: Gargle with Salt Water

Add half a teaspoon of salt to a glass of warm water and rinse with the mixture. This will clean the damaged tooth so you can get rid of any oral bacteria that can cause it further damage.

Step #4: Chew with Caution

Until your dentist is able to repair the damaged tooth, chew on the other side of your mouth. This will lessen discomfort. You should also avoid consuming anything too hot, cold, acidic, or sweet, as these can also cause irritation or sensitivity.

Step #5: Use a Temporary Fix

Dental wax can be used as a temporary fix by sticking it to the damaged tooth. This will create a smooth surface that is less irritating to your cheeks and tongue. You can also purchase temporary filling material, which bonds to your tooth enamel and has a natural, calming effect that can help alleviate discomfort.

Step #6: Brush Carefully

Continue to clean the tooth that lost the dental filling as part of your normal oral hygiene routine every morning and night. Be careful when brushing and flossing, as this can lead to additional irritation or discomfort.

Dental fillings can last a long time, but they can still fall out or become damaged. If you lost a dental filling, follow these six steps to keep your smile healthy until your dentist can repair the tooth and get your smile back on track!
