Managing Eating & Drinking After All-on-4 Surgery

All-on-4 surgery can be an exciting step toward a more comfortable, functional smile, but recovery takes a little patience. One of the biggest adjustments you’ll make after the procedure is what you eat and drink. Your mouth needs time to heal, so you’ll want to stick with foods that are soft, easy to eat, and gentle on your healing tissues.

A little preparation before surgery can make those first few days much easier. Stocking your refrigerator and pantry ahead of time means you’ll have plenty of nourishing options ready when you get home.

What Can You Eat Right After Surgery?

Immediately after All-on-4 surgery, your mouth may feel tender, swollen, or uncomfortable. Your dentist will give you specific instructions based on your procedure, but you’ll generally want to choose soft foods that require little to no chewing.

Smoothies, yogurt, applesauce, pudding, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, oatmeal, and blended soups can all be convenient choices. Protein shakes can also make it easier to get the nutrients your body needs while chewing is uncomfortable.

If you make a smoothie, skip ingredients like seeds or tough pieces of fruit that could be irritating. Using a spoon rather than a straw may also be recommended, depending on your dentist’s instructions.

When Can You Eat More Normally?

Your diet will typically become less restrictive as your mouth heals, but don’t rush the process. Even if you start feeling better after a few days, the tissues around your implants still need time to recover.

Your dentist will let you know when it’s appropriate to begin introducing foods with more texture. Start slowly and follow their instructions about how much chewing is appropriate during each stage of recovery.

If something hurts when you eat it, that’s a good sign to stop and choose something softer for the time being.

Foods to Avoid During Recovery

Certain foods can make recovery more difficult or irritate your mouth. Crunchy, hard, sticky, or chewy foods are generally best avoided while you’re healing. That means you’ll want to temporarily skip things like nuts, chips, popcorn, hard candy, tough meats, and chewy foods.

Very spicy or extremely hot foods may also be uncomfortable when your mouth is sensitive. Alcohol should be avoided if your dental team advises against it, particularly while you’re taking certain medications.

When in doubt, follow the specific dietary instructions provided by your dental team.

What Should You Drink?

Staying hydrated is an important part of recovery, so keep water nearby and sip throughout the day. Other drinks may be appropriate depending on your treatment plan, but it’s generally wise to avoid beverages that are extremely hot while your mouth is healing.

You should also follow your dentist’s instructions regarding drinking through a straw. The suction created by a straw may interfere with healing in some situations, so it’s better to ask before using one.

Make Recovery Easier With a Little Preparation

You don’t need to completely overhaul your kitchen before All-on-4 surgery. Having a selection of soft, nutritious foods ready to go can make mealtimes much less stressful while your mouth heals.

Most importantly, give yourself time. Your diet will gradually return to normal as your dentist confirms that your mouth is ready.

A little planning can go a long way toward making your All-on-4 recovery more comfortable.
