February, also known as American Heart Month, is right around the corner. Aside from Valentine’s Day, this month is all about promoting awareness of heart disease and how to keep your cardiovascular health in tip top shape. Interestingly, one of the connections to heart disease actually begins in your mouth. How is that the case? Read on as your local Denton dentist explains how a healthy smile can lead to a healthy heart.

Heart Health & Gum Disease

Studies have shown there is a connection between heart disease and periodontal disease.

Coronary heart disease is a blood vessel disorder in the heart which can lead to a heart attack. This happens when blood flow to a part of the heart is blocked by a blood clot. When this happens, the part of the muscle supplied by the affected artery can weaken.

Periodontal (gum) disease is an infection of the gum tissue surrounding the teeth due to plaque buildup. If left untreated, inflammation can occur in the gums and spread throughout the body, narrowing important arteries in the process. In addition, bacteria from the gums can potentially enter the bloodstream and lead to plaque buildup, reducing blood flow and infecting the heart.

For these reasons, those with gum disease have a 20% increased risk of having a heart attack or other cardiovascular issues.

What Can I Do to Avoid Gum Disease?

Fortunately, there are a few practices your dentist recommends to help keep your gums healthy. They include:

  • Brushing your teeth twice a day, focusing on the gum line
  • Flossing at least once a day, reaching the plaque or food particles your brush can’t reach
  • Cutting out all tobacco use
  • Being aware if you are at a higher risk from age, diet, or genetics
  • Visiting your dentist twice a year for regular checkups, deep cleaning, and specialized preventive care.

Your cardiovascular health is important and practicing preventive measures for your gum health does wonders. Not only will you promote your overall healthiness, you can be sure to keep a great smile along the way!
